The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect the lower jaw to the skull and are involved in chewing, speaking, swallowing and yawning. Tension involving the jaw, face, neck and surrounding musculature can contribute to jaw discomfort, facial tension and restricted movement. This specialized hands-on treatment combines gentle craniosacral and myofascial techniques to address areas of tension throughout the upper back, shoulders, neck, face and jaw. What to Expect Treatment begins with gentle work through the upper back, shoulders, collarbone, chest and neck to encourage relaxation throughout the structures surrounding the jaw. The treatment then progresses to extra-oral work around the face and jaw, including the muscles involved in chewing. When appropriate and with your informed consent, intra-oral techniques may be used to address the muscles of mastication. Intra-oral treatment is optional. Gloves are used for all intra-oral techniques, and a clear stop signal will be established before treatment begins. You may withdraw consent or stop the intra-oral portion at any time.
